Teaching chemistry from first principles

Most chemistry preparation systems are built around memorisation — lists of reactions, reagents, and products catalogued without connection. Students trained exclusively through memorisation often struggle when confronted with unfamiliar exam questions, which are specifically designed to defeat isolated recall.

My approach begins differently. Before any reaction is introduced, its mechanistic logic is established. Before any reagent is memorised, its functional family is understood. The result is a student who can predict reactions they have never seen — because they understand the chemistry rather than the catalogue.

A student who understands why a reaction proceeds will always outlast one who only knows what it produces.

Why Chemistry?

Chemistry drew me in because it is the one science that explains why the material world behaves as it does — why a bond forms, why a reaction turns one way and not another, why a molecule is stable or reactive. It is not a catalogue of facts but a logic that, once understood, predicts the rest.

Years of study and tutoring revealed a recurring pattern: capable students were being failed not by the subject, but by how it was taught — as something to be memorised rather than understood. That frustration became a purpose. I set out to teach chemistry the way it actually works — from cause to consequence, from mechanism to outcome — so that understanding, not memory, carries the student through.

Academic Journey

2014–17
B.Sc. Chemistry — Dibrugarh University, Assam
First Class. Three years in Northeast India — exposure to rigorous academic environment and diverse perspectives on science education.
2017–19
M.Sc. Chemistry — USTM, Meghalaya
First Class. Dissertation: Nucleophilicity of Pyridine N-Oxides. Postgraduate-level study deepened understanding of organic mechanisms — the foundation of the current teaching framework.
2019–21
Private Chemistry Tutoring — Class XI & XII
Two years of direct teaching experience. Identified the core failure pattern in conventional chemistry preparation — isolated memorisation without mechanistic understanding.
2021–23
B.Ed. — DDU Gorakhpur University
First Class. Formal teacher education — pedagogy, curriculum design, and structured delivery. Integrated with existing chemistry domain expertise.
2023–24
CTET · STET · UPTET — All Qualified
Three teacher eligibility tests cleared — Paper I & II for CTET and STET, Paper II for UPTET. Formal certification of teaching competence at national and state levels.
2024–26
Refining the Teaching Method
Consolidating years of tutoring insight into a structured, mechanism-first approach to chemistry — focused on conceptual clarity and exam-level application.

The framework I've developed — Logic → Structure → Clarity → Control — is not a slogan. It describes the sequence every chemistry topic follows in my teaching.

Logic First
Every topic begins with the question: why does this happen? The mechanism precedes the reaction. The cause precedes the conclusion.
Structure Always
Chemistry is not a list. It is a network of connected ideas. Teaching it structurally — through clusters, families, and hierarchies — makes it navigable rather than overwhelming.
Clarity Over Coverage
A student who understands 100 reactions mechanistically outperforms one who has memorised 500 in isolation. Depth over breadth — always.
Control Under Pressure
The real test is exam performance — where time pressure, negative marking, and novel questions combine. A structured framework produces control. Memorisation produces anxiety.
